Australian government and population
Australia is formally ruled by King Charles III of the United Kingdom, but in practice the country is run by the Prime Minister. Thus, Australia is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, and is part of the British Commonwealth.
The country consists of six states, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia, and two territories: the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory. Australia has a large number of major cities, so it is no wonder that the majority of the population lives in cities. Australia’s major cities are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, and the country’s capital is Canberra.

Melbourne and Hobart

South Australia’s Adelaide is often called the miniature Australia because of its diversity, and its wide range of activities and food and wine offerings make it easy for travellers to enjoy themselves. In Perth, Western Australia, you can enjoy art, beautiful beaches and river cruises.
Outback destinations let you experience authentic Australia
If your goal is to experience Australia’s wildlife in all its diversity, you should include a visit to the wilderness, or more commonly known as the outback. It covers more than 80 per cent of Australia’s land area, and in each state the experience is slightly different.
The most popular outback destinations tend to be concentrated around Australia’s natural attractions, and many travellers seeking an outback experience head to places like the Uluru or South Australia’s Pink Lakes.
Travel in comfort by car or train
If the aim of a trip to Australia is to see as much as possible, many people prefer to hire a car, as the varied scenery is easiest to take in at your own pace.
Train journeys are also one of the most popular ways to see as much of Australia as possible in comfort. Because of the long distances involved, the scenery can be enjoyed perfectly from the train. There are many route options.

Because Australia is located south of the equator, the seasons are the opposite of the northern hemisphere. Mid-summer in Australia is in January, which is why many people plan their trip to Australia at this time of year.
The size of Australia can be difficult to grasp, and travellers should bear in mind that distances are very long, so it’s a good idea to allow enough time for transit.
