A four-day exploration trip will take you to very remote destinations and offers great excursions.
The Ghan Expedition is heading only southbound from Darwin with limited departures.
The route runs from Darwin to Adelaide
Trip duration 4 days, 3 nights
The distance is 2979 km.
Availability from March to October
Departure on Wednesdays
In June, July and August additional departure also on Saturdays.

- Visits to Katherine, Alice Springis and Cooper Pedy.
You can choose one excursion at each stop, or you can upgrade for optional excursions. Ask more when we book your trip.
Examples of excursions:
At Katherine you can choose one of the excursions:
- A cruise in the Nitmiluk gorge, where you can see ancient natural wonders.
- Explore the rich culture and rock art of the indigenous people on the cruise.
- Visit a huge ranch and see how the locals live in the hinterland (May to October only).
At Alice Spring, you join a full-day excursion where you can choose one of four excursions:
- Alice Springs Desert Park
- Alice Explorer
- Simpsons Gap Discovery Walk
- Alice to Off Rad Mountain Bike tour
You also have the opportunity to expand your experience (at an additional cost) and fly to see one of Australia’s most famous landmarks, Uluru.
After a day of activity, return to the train, where you have time to refresh yourself before continuing to dinner at Alice Springs Telegraph Station. Here you will experience the spirit and history of an authentic Outback and enjoy a wonderful dinner under the stars.
Cooper Pedy is a well-known opal mining town that produce most of the opals in the world, estimated at 70%. Opal was first found here in 1915, and after that the city was founded. Although life and access to water in the desert are difficult, today the city has a population of about 3,500 and 45 different nationalities.
Join excursion to explore the area and how difficult mining life in the desert has been. You will also enjoy a lunch at underground in the old mine.
