Australia and New Zealand are perfect destinations for the active traveller: both offer opportunities to play golf, go mountain biking or even try your hand at local fishing. There are also plenty of hiking opportunities as well as beautiful scenery, and if you’re looking for a thrill you can try rock climbing or bungee jumping.

New Zealand was a wonderful, versatile and fascinating country

We did a four-week independent trip to New Zealand and Australia in March 2024. The main focus was on both islands of New Zealand. We moved mainly by rental car, driving ourselves from one destination to another, but also by train, minibuses, ferry, steamboat, fjord ship, bicycles, cable cars and a private scenic flight. In Australia, we spent three days in Sydney at the end of the trip. Planning the trip was easy with Asko from Project Matka. We were able to fit the destinations we wanted into our strict travel schedule. Communication was easy in before and during the trip. On the way, the offline version of the travel program on the phones helped to remember where to go next, and tickets purchased in advance could be easily displayed on the phone at the destinations.

This was definitely one of our best trips!

We wanted to go to New Zealand for a couple of weeks, but we didn’t want to rent a car. We told Asko of Project Matka our wishes and he planned a route for us and suggested different day trips. He took care of all the travel arrangements, i.e. hotels, travel tickets, tours and private transportation. The hotels were always within walking distance of the city centre. We also received detailed instructions on how to find e.g. a day trip for the bus. It was really easy once all the arrangements had been taken care of. Project Matka also gave tips on what to do and see in different cities.
We saw and experienced a lot on our trip: wonderful landscapes, nature sites with animals, cities, museums, even a bit of Maori culture. And the weather happened to cooperate, this was definitely one of our best trips.

The written itinerary Asko sent was good and I had to read it several times during the trip.
The trip was crowned by a New Year’s fireworks cruise.

The food and drinks were good and the captain of the ship made sure everyone could see the fireworks.

Asko planned a wonderful trip – 1 week in New Zealand and 2 weeks in Australia. It was tremendously helpful to have someone who is familiar with the countries design the itinerary and book the between/within country travel needs. Things went much more smoothly than if we had to figure all of the details out ourselves. The schedule was designed in a considerate manner, allowing us time to explore cities on our own and participate in wonderful, scheduled activities. He selected activities that my mother and I thoroughly enjoyed and may not have chosen or even known about if we hadn’t used kimkim. Something that was really helpful was that most of the hotels Asko booked had a free breakfast, which allowed us to easily fuel up before long days of adventure. Asko was prompt in answering questions and was very responsive when we encountered one glitch that was not the fault of Asko, kimkim, or us, which we appreciated.

Our first road trip in many years was an amazing 18 day journey through the north and south Islands of New Zealand. Our trip planner, Asko, spent several months working with us to plan an excellent itinerary that hit all of the things we wanted to experience in this amazing country, while giving us the flexibility to modify the activities and sights based on how much we felt like doing each day. We saw fjords with glaciers and snow capped mountains, waterfalls, hot springs and we hiked in forests. We stopped in all kinds of small towns and big cities. At every location we were able to experience something new, and the hotels and food were the best available, and often 5 star quality. There is a wonderful spirit in this country and we were able to meet and interact with many locals and fellow travelers. Thanks to Asko we have great memories of a special country. Thanks!

We had an amazing trip, it’s really hard to name any specific best part as we enjoyed it all so much, a good mix of organised trips and free time to explore the places we were staying. Asko was wonderful from planning to executing. Loved the itinerary he planned. Unfortunately we had to cancel our trip to Cairns due to cyclone Jasper. So we had to change our plan last minutes. He immediately changed our flights and hotels without any problem. Highly recommend him !!

Overall a great 5 days! Special mention to Fred and John, our guides on Tiwi Islands. Also the small plane flight over Kakadu and rock pool swims in Litchfield were highlights. Possibly a little too much driving, particularly for my 10 year old son. There was one unfortunate snafu involving the car transfer from Darwin airport to the hotel but that was not the fault of Asko or KimKim

The trip was well organized, everything worked flawlessly. The breakfast that was in the morning when we left for Kangaroo Island, we didn’t have time for it because we got to breakfast at 7:30 and we were already picked up at 7:40 a.m. Upon request, we received a small breakfast in the room.

Three wineries might have been enough on a wine tour. Lunch was a bit limited with cheeses, bread and snacks. I was a little hungry at the fourth winery, and everyone on the tour had a “coffee toothache”.
Before returning, you could get a takeaway coffee in the car. It would have been nice to sit down for a while and drink coffee in peace. Otherwise, the wine tour was good. The wine was ordered for home. Thank you for a well-organized trip 🙂
