Beautiful beaches and tropical life in Brisbane
Brisbane has a population of around 2.5 million and is the capital of the state of Queensland. When you travel to Brisbane, you’ll enjoy a subtropical climate that provides year-round warmth and sunshine. It’s a true outdoor city, and locals can enjoy a mix of indoor and outdoor living.
Brisbane’s city centre is located on the Brisbane River, with plenty to see and do on both sides of the river: you can go for a refreshing swim at the South Bank Lagoon or enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants in the Riverside area. The city is easy to explore, and a walk along the riverbank is a good way to do it. Brisbane is also ideal for cycling, with around 16 000 kilometres of cycle paths.
The Gold Coast is about an hour by train from Brisbane, where you can spend a day at the beach or have fun at Australia’s biggest theme parks, such as Sea World, Movie World or Dreamworld. The Gold Coast also has a wide range of hotels and restaurants, so there’s plenty to do for a few days.

Brisbane is full of interesting things to do
Brisbane is divided into a number of interesting neighbourhoods, and it’s also worth visiting outside the city centre, where each area has its own unique atmosphere. For example, the trendy Fortitune Valley area is well worth a visit, where you’ll find places like Chinatown and a wealth of restaurants and bars. In the West End, you’ll find interesting pubs and restaurants and a variety of bohemian shops.
The cosy South Bank area offers visitors plenty to see and do. Culture vultures can visit a museum or the theatre, and you can take in the beautiful scenery on a ride on The Wheel of Brisbane or take a dip in the lagoon. The South Bank area is also a great place to relax in parks and café-restaurants.
Brisbane offers plenty of shopping opportunities on the way
Brisbane also has something to offer shoppers, with the Queen Street Mall in the city centre lined with international brands, shopping malls and major department stores such as Myer and David Jones.
If you want to sample the Australian grocery offerings, you’ll find several food outlets in the downtown area. Coles and Woolworths are Australia’s largest grocery chains, while smaller Woolworths Metro stores can be found around the city.
Australian wildlife and nature can also be seen near Brisbane
From Brisbane’s South Bank, take a river cruise to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, where you can meet some wonderful koalas.
It’s one of the few places where you can hold a koala in your lap, and see kangaroos, wombats and platypus.
About an hour’s drive from Brisbane is the famous Australia Zoo, founded by famous ‘crocodile man’ and conservationist Steve Irwin. Now run by his family, you can meet animals from Australia and around the world.
The tropics’ special flora is well worth seeing, and when you need a break from the more active side of things, you can explore it at places like the beautiful Brisbane City Botanic Gardens and Roma Street Parkland.
Take a day trip from Brisbane to Byron Bay
Byron Bay is considered by many to be the perfect beach holiday destination, as it has everything you need: beautiful beaches and plenty of sunshine. And of course, there’s plenty more to do.
Byron Bay is only a couple of hours’ drive from Brisbane, making it a great day trip destination on your trip to Brisbane. You can go whale watching, surfing or just enjoy the turquoise waters.
Byron Bay has plenty of beautiful walking trails, and one of the most popular is the Cape Byron Walking Track, which takes you to Cape Byron Lighthouse on the easternmost point of mainland Australia. On hot days, it’s worth remembering to get plenty of rest as this 3.7km trail is mostly uphill.
Experience the Queensland outback from Brisbane
A visit to the Queensland outback is a chance to experience Australia at its most authentic: a diverse landscape of wetlands, mountains, desert, rivers, country towns, old-fashioned pubs and farms.
The Queensland outback is conveniently accessible by train from Brisbane, which also allows you to enjoy the scenery at your leisure.
If you want to get there quicker, there are also plenty of flights available.
Brisbane’s public transport is user-friendly
Brisbane has a very comprehensive transport network of trains, buses and ferries, and public transport is an easy way to get around the city. The easiest way to buy public transport tickets is to buy a rechargeable “Go Card”. Paper tickets are also available, but they can only be bought from ticket machines before the journey and cost more than travelling with a Go Card. You can buy a Go Card at stations, for example, or at many kiosks and grocery stores.
Brisbane travellers can also buy a go seeQ ticket for three or five days. The card allows unlimited travel throughout Brisbane, including the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay. The rechargeable travel cards can be used as a payment method on trains, buses, trams and CityCat ferries.
